Look for Nature’s Art on Your Excursions

No matter where your adventures take you, there is something beautiful to discover. Trade staring at a screen for wandering Washington State nature to see what works of art you stumble across.

  • See what aquatic creatures you can find during low tide by exploring the tide pools at Damon Point.
  • Watch Mother Nature paint the sky golden and amber hues from one of the incredible sunset viewing spots, including the North Jetty and Ocean City State Park.
  • Point your binoculars to the sky, or the trees, to do some bird watching. There are several different species to spot, including gulls and snowy plovers.
  • Wander along the shoreline, and you might stumble across a number of beautiful sights like driftwood that has been aged and discolored by the weather.
  • If you’re looking to do a bit of shelling, the best beach area is the North Jetty. Marking the northern entrance to Grays Harbor, this area is known for being a top spot to find sand dollars and other shells.
  • When hiking area trails like the Weatherwax Trail, keep your eyes on the ground, and you might just discover colorful wildflowers.
  • A must for those visiting in the spring is embarking on a whale-watching excursion. Spend time at Pacific Beach State Park with your camera to see if you can capture a whale emerging from the water or its tell-tale spout.

The best way to capture the incredible artwork you discover is with photographs you can put in an album. While your phone can do a decent job, you will want to use a point-and-shoot for the best results.

Everything You Need to Know about Ocean Shores Tides

Some of the best adventures you can embark on when visiting Ocean Shores involve the water. From casting a line fishing to looking for whales, the variety of activities in and around the water means there is something for everyone. Situated right on the beach, The Polynesian Resort is the ideal place for your seaside getaway. However, you need to understand Ocean Shores tides before setting off on your shoreline outings.

What Are High and Low Tides?

Generally, there are two high tides and two low tides a day. The point in which the water reaches as far as possible up the shoreline is high tide. When it recedes to its greatest scale is called low tide. This change is caused by the planet’s rotational force and the moon’s gravitational pull. The changing tides occur in the morning and evening, but the time changes throughout the year. The best way to know when high and low tides are each day is by checking a tide table.

What to Do during High and Low Tides?

This naturally occurring phenomenon can impact what activities you want to do during the day. If you’re hoping to do a bit of surfing, you’ll want to go when the tide is low to medium. If the tide is too low, there’s less room between the bottom and surface of the water. If the tide is too high, you won’t get much of a ride as waves break too close to shore.

The optimal tide you want can vary from activity to activity, including:

  • Slack tide, the hour before and after a high or low tide, for swimming
  • Fishing is best in a falling tide, two hours before low tide
  • Beachcombing and digging for razor clams is ideal at low tide

One of the best activities you can do during low tide is tide pooling. Tide pools are where water gets trapped when the tide goes down by rocks or low spots in the sand. Damon Point is probably the best place for this type of outing in our Washington town. Another great spot is the North Jetty. Whichever of these locations you visit, you might spot various sea creatures like mussels, barnacles, and anemones.

Plan Your Central Washington Coast Getaway

On your next visit to The Polynesian Resort, try Ocean Shores activities at the best possible time by checking the tides. Some of your favorite outings are made that much better during high or low tide. Staying at our Ocean Shores resort means you’re not only close to top adventures but also have a comfortable place to call home.

Our range of condo-style and traditional rooms means you can reserve a space that gives everyone plenty of room to relax and unwind. During your stay, check out our amenities like an indoor pool, on-site restaurant, and more. For more information or to learn about special offers, call 360-289-3361.

Where to Watch a Picturesque Ocean Shores Sunset

The best way to end every day is by watching a breathtaking sunset from some of the best viewing spots in Ocean Shores.

A Guide to the Best Spots for a Washington Sunset

With so much to do and see during your Ocean Shores getaway, it can be hard to sometimes enjoy the slower pace of a vacation. One of the best ways to take a breather from bouncing from adventure to adventure is by watching the sun sink into the horizon. • Listen to the waves roll in at the North Jetty, which is found on the southern end of Ocean Shores. Bring your blanket, supplies for a fire and s’mores, and relax. If you have a fire on the beach, be sure to follow city rules.
  • Just five minutes from the resort is Ocean City State Park. Enjoy a walk along the beach or do a bit of birding before watching the sunset. You can drive on the beach during most seasons, which means you won’t have to haul all your stuff from the parking lot.
  • Another popular park to catch the sunset is Griffiths-Priday State Park. The 533-acre features both river and ocean coastline to relax by as you see the sky painted with red and orange hues.

Of course, one of the best spots to see the sunset is right on our oceanfront property.
