When planning your Washington coast getaway, there are some activities that automatically come to mind, like hiking through forestsfishing along the coastline, and whale watching. When you stay at The Polynesian Resort, you’ll be able to enjoy all of these Pacific Northwest pastimes and more. Another fun and unique experience to try during your vacation in Ocean Shores is clam digging.

What You Need to Know about Digging for Razor Clams

Just like with fishing, there is a season for clam digging. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is in charge of setting the season and scheduling digs. Keep an eye on our calendar for scheduled digs.

Our Ocean Shores resort is near two clam digging beaches: Copalis Beach from the north jetty at the mouth of Grays Harbor to Copalis River, and from the Copalis River to the south boundary of the Quinault Indian Reservation on Mocrocks Beach.

You really only need a few tools to enjoy clam digging:

  • A clam shovel or clam gun
  • Something to store your clams in
  • clamming license

What to Look for before Digging

Digging for razor clams is made easier and more successful when you know what to look for. When you arrive at the beach, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for clam shows. There are three significant kinds of shows:

  • Dimple: a depression in the sand
  • Keyhole: A whole in the stand that has very distinct sides or is shaped like an hourglass
  • Doughnut: A depression in the sand that has raised sides

You can also find clams on the edge of the surf line. Before digging, check out the video from the WDFW to learn how to dig for clams from experts.

Plan a Girls Trip to Ocean Shores

A Girls Trip spent in Ocean Shores at The Polynesian Resort with your female friends will leave you feeling refreshed.

That’s because Ocean Shores is an ideal destination to share with moms, sisters, cousins, and friends.  Getaway to Washington’s favorite seaside destination, located on a six-mile-long peninsula bordered by the Pacific Ocean and Grays Harbor.  Natural beauty abounds, with two freshwater lakes, surrounded by trails, 23-miles of canals, and old-growth forests.    Wildlife abounds, from deer roaming around the neighborhoods to more than 250 species of birds in nearby Damon State Park.  In town, there’s fun shopping, dining, and local galleries to visit, too.

At The Polynesian Resort, you can enjoy the pool and sauna or unwind in a spacious beachfront room or suite. From there, you will experience magical sunsets, lulled by the sound of rolling waves. And, lulled by the voices of some of your favorite people.

Here are four reasons to plan a Girls Trip to The Polynesian in Ocean Shores:

1. You’ll feel connected.  As we get busier, finding time to spend with your friends can get tougher. Therefore, setting aside a few days at the beach allows you to get caught up with the people who nurture you.  You’ll have time to reflect on life changes and shared challenges.

2.You’ll relax. A weekend without responsibilities gives your brain a break. In other words, you can clear your mind, de-stress and come back refreshed. Researchers have proven that when women spend time together, notable increases in oxytocin and serotine occur, providing increased feelings of safety and relaxation.  About all, that’s good for your emotional health.

3. You’ll laugh out loud. Whether starting stories beginning with “Remember when…?” or discussing your latest, favorite Netflix show, at some point your stomach will ache in a good way.  In other words, you are likely to laugh until it hurts.

4. You’ll make new memories.  Without worrying if your spouse or kids will be entertained, you can break out of your comfort zone.   For instance,  explore new activities and experiences and sample new foods and drinks.  Or just enjoy what you like to do.

The hardest part of scheduling a girls’ trip could be selecting a time to getaway. With work, school, family, and commitments, you may be looking months ahead.  That’s ok.  Just get it on your calendar.
